Page to Podium Oscar Reads, Part 1 Though books are totally our bag here at Book Riot, we have a soft spot in our hearts for any medium of good storytelling. This includes TV and movies and theater and essays, etc., etc. (By “we” of course, I just mean me, but I’m pretty sure that most of my Riot colleagues would agree to a large extent, if our Beyond the Books feature every month is any indication.) Around this time of year in particular, I nerd out hardcore. Why? Because it’s Oscar season, of course! My book reading takes a serious nose dive in favor of spending long Saturdays in movie theaters, gorging myself on every. Single. Nominated. Movie. Every one of them. I’ve seen all 53 films nominated for a golden man statue this year, even the really random movies nominated for Best Visual Effects (Oh hai there, Prometheus, you nightmare conjurer, you!) and Best Sound Mixing (RAWR, James Bond. RAWR.). Quite a few films this year have a solid connection to our book friends, though not as many as in some past years. A solid ten movies have literary origins, and of the nine nominated for Best Picture, over half of them five to be exact descended from book form. And with the exception of Beasts of the Southern Wild  and The Sessions, all of the nominees for Best Adapted Screenplay are based on books. Below we break down the book-based nominees for Best Picture and our not-at-all-technical guesses as to their chances of winning. Keep an eye out for Part Two later this week where I look at all the rest of the nominees who have literary roots. Argo 7 Nominations (Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor Alan Arkin, Best Adapted Screenplay Chris Terrio, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Original Score) Though Argo is getting a lot of attention for the nomination it didn’t garner (for Ben Afflecks job as director), it does have a lot of potential to pick up a few awards. The book basis for Argo is a portion of the memoir A Master of Disguise by Antonio J. Mendez and the article “The Great Escape” by Joshuah Bearman; there is now a book version of the movie available, though it was published just in advance of the movie’s release. It’s already picked up four wins for Best Film at major awards shows, and at least four adapted screenplay wins, including at the Writer’s Guild of America Awards. Arkin has also picked up a couple of wins, and a handful more nominations for his performance, but in the major categories, Argo’s best shot at taking home a little gold man is in the Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay categories. Les Misérables 8 Nominations (Best Picture, Best Actor Hugh Jackman, Best Supporting Actress Anne Hathaway, Best Original Song, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound Mixing, Best Production Design) Book turned musical turned movie, Les Misérables is a powerhouse of a film, with epic vocals by both acting nominees, but especially by Hathaway, who probably earned her nomination purely based on the heartrending rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream.” Anyone else disappointed that this won’t be the song performed during the Oscar ceremony? But we will get to see a performance of “Suddenly,” the films contribution to Best Original Song, though it’s anyone’s guess who will be performing it since it was sung multiple times during the film. My hope is for Hugh Jackman as Valjean; that man does know how to work a stage. Best shot for Oscar? Hathaway, without question. Life of Pi 11 Nominations (Best Picture, Best Director Ang Lee, Best Adapted Screenplay David Magee, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Visual Effects, Best Original Score, Best Original Song) Based on the critically-acclaimed 2001 novel of the same name by Yann Martel, director Ang Lee has said that this story as written by Martel was “unfilmable,” and its journey to the screen would support that assertion. But a few choices by Lee that are being recognized with Oscar nods made Life of Pi the most successful of the Best Picture nominees at the box office. In part, his decision to shoot in 3D by far the best way to see it contributed to the recognition in Visual Effects, Cinematography, Production Design, and Film Editing, though each of these nominees is well-deserving without the 3D enhancement. The film is a spectacular visual feast, and it is in these categories it has the best chance of winning. As an “unfilmable” book, David Magee’s adaptation hasn’t garnered as many wins as one might expect, though a win for Ang Lee as Best Director would not be unsurprising considering the massive scope and execution in bringing Pi to life. Lincoln 12 Nominations (Best Picture, Best Director Steven Spielberg, Best Actor Daniel Day-Lewis, Best Supporting Actor Tommy Lee Jones, Best Supporting Actress Sally Field, Best Adapted Screenplay Tony Kushner, Best Original Score, Best Sound Mixing, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Film Editing) Topping the list of films with the most nominations, Steven Spielberg reportedly spent 12 years researching this historical drama based on the final four months of Lincoln’s presidency, focusing on his fight to pass the 13th Amendment to abolish slavery. The film is based in part on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, published in 2005. Let’s be honest: Daniel Day-Lewis has the Best Actor race on lockdown, so let’s focus on categories where the race is a little less clear. In a tough field, the Best Picture and Best Director nomination for Spielberg could make it an interesting run. It is certainly considered a favorite in both categories, as in each of the supporting acting categories, and the Academy does prefer their historical dramas, particularly those directed by Spielberg (see also Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, Munich and War Horse). There’s major potential to sweep in the major categories here. Silver Linings Playbook 8 Nominations (Best Picture, Best Actor Bradley Cooper, Best Actress Jennifer Lawrence, Best Supporting Actor Robert De Niro, Best Supporting Actress Jacki Weaver, Best Director David O. Russell, Best Adapted Screenplay David O. Russell, Best Film Editing) Silver Linings Playbook is the only one of the Best Picture nominees to capture what’s known as the “Big Five” nominations in Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay (either Original or Adapted). To top that off, it also garnered nominations in the two supporting acting categories as well. With that kind of resume, it would be expected that the film based on the 2008 novel by Matthew Quick would be a favorite in most of those categories. That is surprisingly not the case, though Jennifer Lawrence has won the most awards for the film leading up to the Oscars. In such a jam-packed year, Russell’s film isn’t running away from the field, though it could have the potential to upset favorites like Lincoln and Argo. I also like David O. Russell’s chances to win for Adapted Screenplay; it could be the Academy’s way of recognizing him without snubbing Spielberg in the Directing category. Other bookish Best Picture notes: Beasts of the Southern Wild is based on a one-act play,  Juicy and Delicious by Lucy Alibar, that is now available in print. Zero Dark Thirty, though not technically adapted from any one printed source, one account of the raid and assassination of Osama Bin Laden, No Easy Day, was published in 2012. Beating Burnout Podcast Episode 125

   Burnout. It’s something that virtually all educators, traditional or homeschool, have felt from  time to time. As a home educator, I know I certainly have felt it. For me it typically rears its ugly head right about this time of the year. After all, we are now a few weeks out from the bliss of an extended winter break, and the long months of winter are stretching before us to what feels like forever. And I know I’m not alone. I have several public school teacher friends who have been commenting on Facebook about how tired they are and how much they need a break. Have you felt it, too? Burnout seems to especially affect teachers. According to an article in Psychology Today, burnout is an international affliction, affecting educators all across the globe. That’s why I’m so grateful for this recent podcast, â€Å"Episode 125: Beating Burnout,† where Andrew Pudewa and Julie Walker describe the root cause of burnout and discuss useful tools and tricks to keep it at bay. As I listened to them talk about ways to minimize burnout, I felt empowered and equipped. I think you will, too. So check it out. Prohibition was a period of time in which the sale, manufacture, or transport of alcoholic beverages became illegal. It started January 16, 1919 and continued to December 5, 1933. Although it was designed to put an end to all drinking, it simply created a large number of bootleggers who produced and sold illegal alcohol. Many of these bootleggers became very rich and influential through selling alcohol and also through other methods. They pioneered the practices of organized crime that are still used today. Thus, Prohibition led to the rapid growth of organized crime. The introduction of prohibition in 1919 created numerous opinions and issues in American society. (Constitution) The public reaction to the introduction of Prohibition was largely mixed. The temperance organizations rejoiced at their victory. Over a century of work had finally paid off for them. The rest of the country, however, was less than pleased. Many saw it as a violation of their freedom, and others simply wanted to keep drinking. It did not take long for people to begin their protest. Less than one hour after prohibition took effect six gunmen hijacked a train in Chicago and stole over $100,000 worth of whiskey that was marked for medicinal use (Gingold 28). In New York, although there were no violent protests recorded that night, people all over the city mourned the loss of alcohol at their favorite saloon or restaurant, and drank a final toast at midnight (John ... Toll of 12). The huge public demand for alcohol led to a soaring business for bootleggers. When prohibition began, people immediately wanted a way to drink. Hence, the extremely profitable bootlegging business was born. Before Prohibition gangs existed, but had little influence. Now, they had gained tremendous power almost overnight. Bootlegging was easy - New York City gangs paid hun dreds of poor immigrants to maintain stills in their apartments. Common Man as Tragic Hero in Death of a Salesman What is tragedy? While the literal definition may have changed over the centuries, one man believed he knew the true meaning of a tragic performance. Aristotle belonged to the culture that first invented tragic drama – the ancient Greeks. Through this, he gave himself credibility enough to illustrate the universally necessary elements of tragic drama. In The Poetics, Aristotle gives a clear definition of a tragedy, writing that it is â€Å"an imitation, through action rather than narration, of a serious, complete, and ample action, by means of language rendered pleasant at different places in the constituent parts by each of the aids [used to make language more delightful], in which†¦show more content†¦The fall of a king or a man of great power served as the basis for Aristotle’s perfect tragedy. As centuries have passed, however, the world has evolved into a place with very few kings, but does this mean the modern experience is devoid of tragedy? With his 1949 play Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller proved such was not the case. The story of traveling salesman Willy Loman, his feeble relationship with his eldest son, and his professional failure demonstrated that tragedy could be translated into the modern world. A consistent Phenomenon Nazi Chic in Asia

In some Asian countries, there is a phenomenon that seems very odd to most Germans: It’s grounded in a strange view and handling of the Third Reich. It seems that in countries such as Mongolia, Thailand and South Korea, there is quite a market for Hitler or Nazi goods. A recent finding, that went viral in German social media, was a World War II Nazi action figure from China, bearing a strong resemblance to German soccer star Bastian Schweinsteiger. Notably, the toy is also called, â€Å"Bastian.† But the fascination certain Asian countries share for Hitler’s regime goes further than that. And it is not even that new. Taking it to the next Level: the Fifth Reich and other Oddities Running for more than ten years, a bar in Seoul, South Korea, skipped the Fourth Reich and directly created the Fifth. It’s a Nazi-themed pub that makes the visitor feel like entering the set of a Hitler movie. Apropos Hitler, the mass-murdering Fà ¼hrer of the Third Reich is actually lending his name to another bar in the South Korean city of Busan: The â€Å"Hitler Techno-Bar Cocktail Show.† Now, none of these places seem to have any ties to local Neo-Nazi-groups or even a political message. They are just trying to profit from the sensation that surrounds the Nazi era – and from the Nazi style. In Indonesia, a Nazi-themed cafà © called â€Å"Soldatenkaffee† (Soldiers Cafà ©, named after a Wehrmacht-hangout in Paris) had to close in 2013, about two years after its opening. India is home to a well-working market of Hitler memorabilia and his hateful book â€Å"Mein Kampf† a returning bestseller. In Germany, the sale of â€Å"Mein Kampf† is still prohibited. From January 2016 on, the author’s copyright will expire, leaving anyone to do with the material as they please. Many people fear what might happen when the book enters German stores. Others believe an openly accessible â€Å"Mein Kampf† will weaken its hold over the German NS-debate – powers they attribute to the fact it is not freely available and thus remains mysterious. Similar curiosities as in India can e.g. be found in Cambodia, Japan or Thailand. Nazi Chic and Third Reich Fashion But Thailand is not just another place one could easily obtain Nazi memorabilia. It seems a lot of Thai people have a strange deep-rooted fascination for Hitler and Nazi Chic. When it comes to fashion, it’s not only an obvious admiration for the Wehrmacht’s tailors. Nazi symbols and, very often, depictions of Adolf Hitler are found on T-Shirts, bags or sweaters. There also is an interesting trend to turn the Fà ¼hrer into some kind of cartoon character. One of the weirdest illustrations of him is showing a Hitler in a panda costume. According to many blogs and visitors, numerous people can be seen wandering the streets of Bangkok, wearing Nazi or Hitler-themed clothes. Pop groups, like the pop band â€Å"Slur†, set the suiting examples, dressing up as Hitler in one of their videos. But Third Reich Fashion is not limited to Thailand. In Hong Kong, China, for example, a fashion corporation released a whole line of products adorned with Nazi symbols. As late as 2014, a Korean pop group performed in outfits, very much looking like SS-Uniforms (The SS or â€Å"Schutzstaffel† –Protection Squad –, was one of the most feared and ruthless Wehrmacht-brigades, responsible for some of the most heinous war crimes committed by German forces.). The fact that it still seems quite common for Korean youth to attend costume parties dressed as Nazi soldiers proves that this is not a very exceptional incident in Korea. A Disconcerting Phenomenon Even though most of the fashion designers, memorabilia vendors or cafà © owners claim to either not really knowing much about Nazis or Hitler, or at least not wanting to offend anyone, the phenomenon itself remains highly disconcerting. People from Europe, the USA or, more so even, Israel could easily be offended by the likenesses of Hitler, being used as the logo for a restaurant, or a parade of teenagers, dressed up as the SS. Of course, one should never forget the huge cultural differences of some Asian cultures, opposed to those of what is usually called â€Å"The West.† Though after looking at some of the pictures of Asian youth, one could come to the conclusion the cultural gaps might be larger than they actually are. More problematic are the attributes or â€Å"virtues†, that are taken away from the Third Reich or its Fà ¼hrer in some countries – meaning the people, that are fully aware of the atrocities committed during the Holocaust, while still praisi ng the Nazi’s discipline or vigor.   Hitler and the Nazi Regime of course still have a strong hold over Germany: since scholars started to debate the country’s past in the 1960’s, it remains a constant issue in our everyday lives. In this essay I shall be examining two characters and their actions and roles in the book I shall also be comparing the two characters and examining their relationship with one another. I have chosen to examine Jamie and Edmund. Jamie is considered a failure by our standards; he was neglected as a child by his parents and never loved. He bent almost backwards so they (the Chatfields; well off family) wouldn’t see him†. Jamie’s failure is always blamed upon himself when in fact his parents’ neglect of him resorts him not to succeed in life. His mother, the most important to him considers him to be a big let down to the family; â€Å"who would of thought that Jamie would grow up to disgrace us†. On the other hand Edmund is some what succeeding in life compared to his brother, he has sailed around the world and his only stunt is that he is always ill. It is felt through out the book that he is beginning to fail in life and follow in his brothers footsteps. He is similar to his brother in ways, but one difference is that Edmund is spoilt by his mother and she tends to flap if she suspects Edmund is poorly; â€Å"I’ve been so worried ever since you’ve been sick†. This shows how Mary grants her children little freedom and independence, by the fact that if Edmund is ever to be sick he knows he can always run to his mother, if Mary had left things maybe Edmund would be away from home and might be succeeding in life. Edmund has always been sick and has never really come to terms with this; â€Å"That’s foolishness you know its only a cold†. This is a good point on Edmunds half because with this confidence he should be able to act like a normal healthy man and go out into the wide world but his mothers grasp on him stops him from doing so. Jamie on the other hand is not as mollycoddled by his mother as Edmund and chooses his freedom to get drunk and spend all his money on whores. His father has an alcohol problem and Jamie does only what he knows and has also resorted to drink, like his father. His father is quite a hypocrite by locking up the whisky so Jamie can’t drink and become an alcoholic, but is happy to be one himself. Jamie also resorts to going to brothels to try and gain some love from whores, by paying them, they are referred to as the â€Å"fat burlesque queens†. It can be said that Jamie lacks ambition in life and is happy to waste his days in the bar and at the burlesque house. Summed up by â€Å"loftier dreams than whores and whiskey†. Edmund through out the play feels like he doesn’t have his father to turn to in times of need so he resorts to Jamie, and also Jamie acts as a father figure when he feels the need to â€Å"Listen, kid. You know me I’ve never lectured you, but Doc hardy was right† It is thought that Jamie is trying to bring Edmund down in life like him maybe in order to counterbalance his failure, and Jamie acts like a replacement to Tyrone. Jamie is very sarcastic in the play and jumps at any chance to make a sly comment to try and bring down any form of happiness that the family might have; â€Å"another shot in the arm†. This is to do with the fact Jamie doesn’t understand and he his only contribution is purely sarcasm. During the play the different stage directions help to show us what the characters are like. Jamie’s sarcasm is portrayed with stage directions such as â€Å"(maliciously) (looks away guilty) (dryly) (sneering)† and â€Å"JAMIE takes one look at the bottle and glasses and smiles cynically†. His personality causes conflict within the family where his parents are to blame for their nurturing of his personality. The stage directions for Edmund show him to be disheartend and gloomy; â€Å"(gloomy) (disturbed) (ignoring this)†. He is Naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve at times and acts as if he is not hard done by even though he is treated badly. The stage directions in the play help to add depth to the characters and make them appear more human in the text and gives the characters more credibility as ‘real’ people. The rotations of characters are also important to see how the characters interact. The rotation between Jamie and his father, Tyrone, shows how likes repel each other as their views conflict; Tyrone; â€Å"The less you say about Edmund’s sickness the better for your conscience†. Jamie is made to feel like he’s to blame for Edmund’s sickness even though it could be down to Tyrone’s neglect. The rotation between Jamie and Edmund shows Jamie out to be a father figure to Edmund; â€Å"I love your guts, I’d do anything for you† this shows Jamie out to be the father Edmund has never had but Jamie often resorts to the ways of his father; â€Å"What are you trying to do, accuse me? The Tao Te Ching says in this portion that one must give up wordily things such as luxuries and lifes little extravagances because they cause great disturbance for another individual, on the basis that they dont have this particular item. (c.3) The Tao Te Ching states that one must be willing to give these items up and not want them at all, for if one individual has an extravagant item or luxury another individual will want that item or another one like it. On one point the Taoist can be correct in making this claim. A good example of this would be if no one valued gold, well then no one would want it. Yes and also in a hypothetical world this would cut or even stop theft and other crimes that may occur in relation with theft. However to what extent is this theory true? We cannot assume that everyone can just throw basic desires or even certain wants away; after all we are all human and many of us want many different things out of life. The Taoist theory has many good intentions but is by far unethical. You cannot expect anyone person to throw away what they desire. People in a society and culture desire things for a reason. The first reasoning being because that individual wants that particular item, and secondly it makes them feel good to own it, to have achieved it. Every individual is different in society some of us have the same traits but no one is identically alike, that is one of the things that make our race so unique. To suggest that we give up a portion of our self worth and drive for achievement is ridiculous. A society or culture is founded upon certain rules and ethics.
